Expressing Love, Joy, and Identity Through Sign Singing
Jaya Harris
Deaf Queer Festival Performer | Solo Sign Singer | Trans Advocate
Melbourne, Victoria
Meet Jaya Harris, a proud Deaf trans woman originally from Hobart, Tasmania, now calling Melbourne home. Jaya uses she/her pronouns and brings heart, grace, and authenticity to the stage through the beautiful art of sign singing.
From a young age, Jaya was drawn to music and Auslan. She participated in an Auslan choir throughout her primary and high school years, and later continued this joy by joining an Auslan choir in Melbourne. It was through these collective experiences that she rediscovered her love for performance and decided to challenge herself by stepping into the spotlight as a solo sign singer.
Her debut solo performance at the Deaf Queer Festival marks a significant personal milestone. Jaya is especially drawn to slow, expressive songs that speak of love, joy, and dreams—music that allows her to connect deeply with her emotions and create meaningful experiences for her audience.
Jaya identifies as a proud Deaf trans woman, and her presence on stage reflects the rich intersection of her identity and artistry. Her performance is not just an act—it’s a celebration of authenticity, self-expression, and pride.
The message Jaya hopes to share with others is simple, yet powerful:
“Be you.”
