Lorraine Sorono

Shaking Up the Stage with Dance and Fierce Expression

Lorraine Sorono
Deaf Dancer | Choreographer | Queer Performance Artist
Melbourne, Victoria

Hailing proudly from Cebu, Philippines, Lorraine Sorono—affectionately known as Loz—lost her hearing as a 6-month-old baby due to the effects of rubella. But that never stopped her from making noise in the world of dance.

Moving to Melbourne in 1987, Loz attended the Victorian School for the Deaf, where she first learned English Sign Language, later transitioning to Auslan. Inspired by dance icons like MC Hammer, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson, she fell in love with movement and rhythm, using them as tools for expression. With the guidance of her brother Carlo and the legendary Wickid Force Breakers (Australian Breakdance Champions), Loz mastered the art of breakdancing and took her talents to the competition stage.

Beyond performing, Loz has choreographed and taught dance at the Victorian School for the Deaf, inspiring young Deaf dancers to find their own rhythm and voice.

Discover how she turned her passion for movement into a groundbreaking career, her experiences as a Deaf queer dancer, and what it truly means to express rhythm beyond sound.

At the Deaf Queer Festival, Loz is set to deliver an explosive dance performance that defies expectations, blending breakdancing, voguing, and street dance in a way that only she can. Expect pure energy, fierce movement, and a performance that will leave you breathless!
